Our new wall clock is a combination of traditional clock craftsmanship and contemporary design.

The case is manufactured in dark cherry wood with fine metal inlays.

• all glass is bevelled
• wooden surfaces are manually lacquered following several intermediate sandings
• on special request this regulator can also be manufactured in other colours.

This clock is the first model featuring our recently developed cable driven movement HMW111 with 1/2h strike. It features a finely decorated dial and thermally blued steel skeleton hands.

This Sinclair Harding Great Wheel Skeleton Clock features architecture from the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Oman and the culmination of many hours of detailed design, manufacture and finishing.

The top of the plates are styled on the Main Minaret, topped with a Gold finished final and merged into destinctive gold fretted dome. The movement sits on two plynths each having 48 parts, the outside details represents the calligraphy bays and North facade of the main prayer hall. The inside of each plinth features detail from Riwag Arches and miniature Bardiglio columns in the main prayer hall.

The main clock dial and wheel crossings are inspired by some of the detail from the complex interior dome structure with contrasting textures of frosted and polished Rhodium plate finish.

The engraved sub plate takes some of the intricate interlacing detail from central rose of the legendry Mosque carpet the design of which is based on Shaykh Lutfallah dome in Isfahan.

The movement is a spring driven with 8 days power reserve and stopwork with a deadbeat escapement and silk suspended pendulum. Mounted on a Italian Nero Marquini feet represent the base elements of the four corner minarets which are located at the corners of the rectangular complex.

Original designs from the 18th century are faithfully reproduced in a complex procedure using copper as a base material. The original painted clocks have been designed by an artist. These clocks will fit any interior design as a unique piece of art.

All clocks feature reliable chain driven 8-days movements with pendulums. Only authentic material is used for the dials and accessories.

In homage to the James Condliffe of Liverpool, circa 1860 this single train skeleton clock is the first of a collection of 3 different pieces being made in 2008/2009 and NEW for BASELWORLD 2008.

The exquisite crossings of the wheelwork and plates have been designed to show Sinclair Harding’s attention to detail and finishing at its very best.
The frames, pierced out of solid brass, are gracefully faceted, polished and burnished to provide a gleaming support for the four-wheel train. The Great Wheel has 288 teeth and makes only one revolution daily. This drives the centre wheel, which is framed, by the pierced chapter ring and bezel. The hands are extremely delicate and can made in gold plated brass or highly polished and blued steel to provide a greater contrast.

The escapement is a ‘Graham Deadbeat’ controlled by a ‘silk’ suspension and Invar pendulum. The movement is fitted with Maltese cross stop work to achieve the best timekeeping and the clock runs for a full 8 days.

The movement is mounted on two ornate pillars and appears to be floating over the base made from a sandwich of decorative brass plates and selected wood or marble of your choice.

Finally the clock is protected by a framed glass shade (not shown), which does not need removing to wind.

The piece is available finished with gold plate or a combination of gold and Rhodium.

Probably the most popular clock in our range of Sea clocks, the Moonphase Sea clock embodies 3 of John Harrison’s basic principles used his original H1. It also provides in the Moonphase dial a representation of the competition (Lunar distance method) he faced for the solution to the Longitude problem back in the 18th Century.


The compound pendulums and Grasshopper escapement are positioned at the front of the clock making the subtle and almost silent “lock and release” of the pallets enduringly fascinating to watch.

Almost every piece is made in the workshops of Sinclair Harding using a combination of modern technology, materials and traditional finishing techniques. Every care is taken at each stage in the making and build to ensure that the final clock performs to a standard, which justifies the association with John Harrison.

Almost all the non moving parts are Gold plated and the whole clock is mounted on a base of your choice into which the key and hand setter are stored, Mahogany is the standard material but other options are Ebony, Walnut, and Marble, if we can get it, you can have it.

Finally the clock is protected by a framed glass shade (not shown) into which holes are provided in the glass allowing the winding to be carried out without having to remove the shade.

A new clock of Matthias Naeschke is always a technological unity with fine aesthetic focus. The longcase clock NL126 skilfully blends the majestic swing of the unusually long 1,75 m (1¼ seconds) pendulum with the long running duration of the clockwork of one year. Decades of accumulated experience of the German clockmakers from building long duration clocks and the fundamental horological knowledge about physical feasibility have combined in the realisation of this fine development.


The energy necessary for the drive of the pendulum of the NL126 is generated from a driving force of only five kilograms, which is distributed on two separate weight lines. The clockwork is skeletonized in the typical manner of Matthias Naeschke. The large central escape wheel is a noble feature of the shape and form of the finely gilded plates. The use of twelve modern stainless precision ball bearings, four ruby bearings and ruby pallets on the anchor together with extremely precise gearing reduces the natural frictional loss of energy to an absolute minimum. A hand engraved chapter ring from Sterling Silver completes the work. The cabinet of the NL126 is styled in a very conservative manner. The front door possesses a full-height pane of bevelled glass providing a full and free view of the interesting technology behind it. Inlays from mother of pearl and ebony in the cabinet rear wall set small points of sheen which enhances the compulsion of this clock in drawing the viewer into its spell. The clockmakers integrated a concealed LED unit into the cabinet head so that even in the night, when this is illuminated, the subtle glow enhances the polished gold and silver of the surfaces which appear even more brilliant.

Is a baroque birdcage harmonious with the 21st century? The answer is a clear and compelling “Yes”. Yes, it preserves equilibrium with today’s hurried and increasingly sombre world. A world ever more oriented towards material gain, where gaiety becomes a mere facade that cannot touch the heart.

How different was the sensual, baroque joie de vivre. In bygone days, people gratefully filled their lives with meaning, coaxing the senses with charm and artistic sensuality. The desire to have beautiful, harmonious things around one was as well, the growing hallmark of an artistic soul. This was the heyday of musical automatons. In the mid 18th century, a number of craftsmen developed a very high artistic and technical standard which nowadays can at best only be surpassed by exceptional quality of material and durability.

However, creating music automatons required not only skilled hands but also comprehensive, specialised knowledge. One type of music box – rare even in those days – consisted of a birdcage with a small mechanical pipe organ and an animated bird.

Superficially, Matthias Naeschke’s singing bird appears identical to a baroque original. Every hour, this strikingly beautiful birdcage music box plays a gay, baroque-style melody and beguiles the spirit. It brightens the day, purging the hectic routine of everyday life.

At the base of the cage, there is an enamel dial below a precision 8-day movement which was custom-made by master clockmaker Paul Gerber. The gilded hands were designed to complement the magnificent base bezel. Eight harmonious, perfectly formed side bars bestow the cage a captivating nobility. In order to achieve this, an exceptional number of individual steps – involving drawing, sawing, engraving, polishing, cleaning and gilding are required.

The movement for the automation is concealed under a delicately pierced and gilded cover, lined with the finest silk cloth. Positioned between strong brass plates, the organ and the movement constitute a very compact, beautifully proportioned unit. The movement itself is an example of outstanding clock workmanship. Without exception, all steel elements were hardened and all components polished to perfection. The fly brake that regulates the speed is seated on rubies. The wind organ with its 10 tin pipes consists of the manuals, the barrel, the reservoir, the bellows and the wind chest with the valves. The feathered bird is controlled by invisible mechanics to move in time to the music. It moves its beak, its tail, quivers its body and discreetly turns its head.

Underneath the hood of this clock is a complete organ movement that is driven by a falling weight working to a solidly constructed mechanism. The bellows sits behind the movement and the wind chest and pipes are mounted on a frame above the timekeeping and organ movements.

All parts of the organ mechanism are made in the finest traditions of craftsmanship. Only traditionally aged and seasoned wood is used. The cylinders and other wooden parts are further seasoned over several years to be sure that no distortion will occur to their exacting dimensions.

Type two of the wall clocks is mounted with an automaton. Various possibilities of figures are available and birds, musicians or dancing figures are possible. Surrounded by a small theatre, the automaton sits above a hand carved dial with gilded surrounds.

Together with classical Black Forest weights and pendulum, this type of clock is at home in houses with country-style interiors.

The hands are hand cut and gold plated.

Organ clock music encompasses only a very small segment of our Western musical culture. Despite the fact such an area of music does exist in its own right. On the one hand, a composer who is writing for a small organ clock is limited by the range and volume of the instrument, but on the other hand be has completely different tone qualities as his disposal. The limits and possibilities of manual playing techniques do not play a role here at all. Even 15-part chords or simultaneously played chords with runs or trills are possible.

With the pinned barrels of these small organ mechanisms the most subtle variations in tempo and rhythm are possible. By influencing the response of the pipes, the finest nuances in articulation are obtainable, since the valves can be opened a various speed. In short, music be made more lively than is possible when a musician himself plays.

The designer who marks the barrel must be a sensitive musician who has experience in harmonization and ornamentation and finds an ideal form of musical expression in his making of the barrel. The barrel itself has had a long tradition lasting over 500 years, having been used for chimes, mechanical spinets, harp clocks, then organ clocks, as well as for ordinary barrel organs. From the middle of the eighteenth century onwards, the heyday of the organ clock, the possibilities for rendering music with the pinned barrel reached a state of perfection. Essential for such perfection, however, was the precision and durability of the organ clock movements achieved by the clock makers of the time.

An important factor which can be put to good musical effect is the perfect harmonic tuning possible with this instrument only. For diatonic organ clocks with an additional F sharp this means: the major thirds G – B, C – E; D – F sharp; F – A and the 6 fifths F – C; G – D; A – E; H – R sharp; C – G; E – B are beat-free. For chromatic organ clocks the notes C sharp, E flat, G sharp and B flat are tuned as beat-free major thirds. (Middle-tone tuning would also be possible). In this way not only do beat-free thirds and fifths result, but also beat-free fourths, beat-free whole tones, beat-free tritons. The musical result is that one produces a perfect fusion of intervals and chords, thus producing the corresponding lower combination tones.

These combination tones give the small instruments a much greater acoustic capacity. The impartial listener expects the pipes to be lager. In organ clock compositions, individual, separately composed chords are heard as single tones with varying tonal colour, similar to the tone quality of the cornet tone of a large organ, which , after all, consists of 5 pipes. However, the acoustic effects can for the most part be achieved only within the range which is normal for organ clocks. When the instrument is played at considerably higher or lower pitch levels these effects are lost.

The highest note of a 1-stop organ clock is somewhere between g 3 and c 4 , i.e. at about 2000 hertz. Likewise, one only finds notes below g 0 in instruments with several stops. Even in earlier times they no longer played any authentic organ clock music. A primer for achieving musical effects on the organ clock acoustically and by means of playing techniques are J. Haydn’s small and large pieces for organ clock . In especially fast arpeggios or runs what results is a kind of harmonic murmuring, such as in the Presto No. 3 in measure 12 – 13 and 32 – 33, where the intervals as such are not recognizable. In the Presto No. 12, bar 32 and in similar passages one is also not aware of what is really going on. These small pieces for organ clock play for 28 seconds, with rhythmic accentuation of the downbeat only.

Table organ clocks are produced in different design. Bevelled glass panels at the sides are possible, also visible tin pipes in the case front. In bracket clock style the organ clock has 17 pipes and a organ movement with barrel and fusee.

A masterpiece among Haydn’s organ clock music is the Allegretto No. 27, which was originally found on the barrel of an organ clock presented to Prince N. Esterhazy in 1793 and published one year later, in 1894, as a piece for harpsichord or pianoforte. The organ clock plays this piece in 40 seconds. To be useful as a piano piece it should be played at about half that tempo, yet the effects which are only possible when it is played on an organ clock are lost. Rhythmically speaking, the piece clearly heads towards a first climax, the G-major chord in the second bar. Due to the correct harmonic makeup, the chord is experienced by the listener as s single tone, accompanied by the lower combination tone, especially since it has been preceded by various tone colours, in part with a doubling of the third, which enhance this effect. Similar effects are to be found in several parts of this piece. In the seventh bar the individual notes are not perceptible, but once more they produce merely a kind of structured murmuring. In bars 16, 17 and 18 the various chords sound like single tones with peculiarly differing tone colours. They do not sound at all wrong or out of tune as would be the case with the piano! Bars 21 and 22 really come to sparkle with their harmonically correct composition. Typical for the sound of the organ clock are also the sixteenth-runs starting in bar 8, the low whole-tone trills, the triplets from bar 29 on and the thirty-second-runs and movements from bar 30 onwards.

This is music which one can and must listen to time and again. Every time it is a new challenge to explore the musical subtleties of it in depth. The music is purely instrumental. When other pieces of music are arranged for the organ clock, these criteria have to be taken into account.

The construction of organ clocks requires a variety of skills: clock-making, metalwork and carpentry, apart from the technical drawing and design of the clock, design of the organ barrel and positioning of the pins.

Experience has shown that the technic of music production by means of a barrel with pins set therein, devised at least two hundred years ago, remains unsurpassed. The transcription of music for the organ clock is also a very skilled and time consuming process. Clearly there are limitations as to what note can be played with the organ barrel, bearing in mind the limited rage of notes than can be made with the relatively small number of pipes that can be installed in a clock case

Matthias Naeschke is a skilled musician and has adapted tunes to suit his organ clocks. Thus his clocks are musically unique.

Regarding the actual construction of the clocks, the pre-manufactured barrels are stored in the workshop for at least one year and gradually turned down to the correct size over the year. This involves at least fife separate turning operations which are necessary at the wood may expand and contract for a long time.

The last time they are turned the amount of wood removed from the circumference is not more than 0.2 mm. This very slow process is essential so that the barrel does not warp or change diameter over the decades. If it did, then the musical tone would be ruined

Only the oldest most seasoned woods are used by Matthias Naeschke for making barrels and keyboards. Pieces of old wine casks or one or two centuries-old stair treads, alongside normally cut old woods, are used for making the barrels and the organ chest.

All these woods have to be selected for a perfect fit and this entails the use of some rather unexpected tools, such as surgical scalpels, fine tweezers, 2mm wide chisels and so on. For the organ chest, keyboard and valves the woods must be cut along the grain.

The edges cannot be sanded or even filed. A precision fit is essential; for example, the valves must open and close without rattling.

At Matthias Naeschke’s workshop long-term experiments are carried out before any new wood-working technics are put into production.

Tests for humidity, temperature and air pressure, alone or in combination, are made on various wood types and ages. Various questions have to be asked. How is friction affected? Should the woods be waxed or even oiled? Which woods are the most suitable for any particular use? Should the wood be used along or across the grain? Can it be sawed or must it be split? All these test and considerations are essential if long-term function, for decades and even centuries, is to be feasible.

A different type of wood-working is required for the small organ pipes; for reasons of tone quality stopped pipes are used for organ clocks and these have to be made with extreme care, as in parts the thickness of the pipe walls is only 2,0 mm. Naturally there is high wastage as only about 5 – 10% of the original wood is left in the completed pipe. These pipes have leather-covered stoppers which are also used for tuning purposes.

Only for organ clocks with 2 stops, i.e. with 2 rows of pipes, one set of open pipes is built. They serve solely for altering or reinforcing the tone quality. To achieve perfect tonal quality the mouths of the pipes are continually modified … a time consuming process. In a set of organ clock pipes not a single pipe must differ in tonal quality. After all, everyone will notice a discordant pipe as they are played day after day.

The organ clocks were built of affluent, culturally sophisticated people, with an appreciation of art and music. They possibly originated in the late seventeenth century, but their heyday was in the “Age of Reason” in the eighteenth century.

The finest specimens were built primarily in Berlin around 1770. But many were made in Vienna a decade later, and in England, the Netherlands and France.

The greatest advances in organ clock making were made by the Viennese. They made the clockwork in such a high standard that the motion of the wheels and pinions and the rotation of the fly did not drown the melodious sounds of the organ itself. The tonal quality of the pipes was perfected and remains unsurpassed to this day. Finally they doubled the musical playing time to 5 to 8 minutes, without the necessity of rewinding the clockwork to drive the mechanism.

Ludwig Bolzmann and Johann Mälzel first made such organ clocks; they were followed by Hoss, Steiner, Seyffert. Wichmann, Heinrich; and others.

Extensive production of organ clock began in the Black Forest from circa 1810, but these clocks were of muck lower quality.

They were also used for entertainment in inns and taverns. Thus they already existed, like the other kinds of clocks made in the Black Forest, at the dawn of the age of mass production. At the same time barrel organs were manufactured in large numbers.

At about this time the era of organ clock manufacture came to an end. Alternatives to organ clocks were the much cheaper musical boxes developed in Switzerland which however, like the carillon, were not capable of musical articulation. As the Swiss music box movements were initially confined to clocks they were erroneously referred to as “Spieluhr” (musical clock).

Today many of these precious old organ clocks are to be found in private collections and museums. As the clocks made by Matthias Naeschke follow in the long tradition of organ clock making, and his skills are recognised world-wide, time and again he is asked by collectors and the museum curators throughout the world for advice and information on an old organ clock.

Variation: NT 1 „L’Amour“

The table clock L’amour, which weighs almost 50 kg, resembles a gilded shrine. The fully gilded 100-day movement sits enthroned on four mighty silvered pillars of solid brass.

The clock is driven by a barrel and fusee: a method which is little used nowadays and which serves to equalise the torque exerted by the mainspring as the spring runs down, thus delivering a constant force to the wheel train.

The movement consists of just a few superbly worked wheels and pinions. They transmit the impulses to the escapement and dial train with utmost efficiency. Experts and lovers of mechanics delight in comprehending the workings of the clock.

The escapement used is the dead-beat escapement with ruby pallets developed by Matthias Naeschke. The movement is complemented with a 5-rod compensation pendulum and fine adjuster.

Fine, balanced steel hands turn around a chapter ring made of solid sterling silver.

Cut by cut, a master engraver incises delicate numerals and characters into the resilient material and thus each dial is unique. The clockmaker finally screws the darkened, tarnish-protected, lavishly finished dial on to the four pillars.

A bell jar with bevelled glass protects the clock from dirt and dust.

Two 6cm plates of Galactica granite form the base for this precious movement. The raw material has had a long, hard journey from its rocky origins to the finished plinth. Sawn, smoothed into form and finally elaborately polished to perfection, the stone unfolds its inherent beauty and shimmering structure. A unique natural product.

Variation: NT 1 „Le bijou“

The table clock NT 1 „Le bijou“ is an outstanding variation of the classical NT 1 „L’amour“.

This is the first clock ever to carry diamonds in the outer diameter of the escape wheel. The space between the teeth and the branches of the wheel is set with 108 diamonds in quality w/vs 4,59 carats. It needs a skilled jeweller to execute this delicate work without damaging the teeth of the wheel. Mounted in the movement, this wheel ennobles the NT 1 “Le bijou” to be a piece of fine jewellery.

Variation: NT1 „La beauté“

Another variation of the NT 1 „L’amour“ is the NT 1 „La beauté”. All visible brass parts of this clock except the gilded wheels are rhodium plated.

The occurrence of the rhodium metal is very seldom. It belongs to the platinum family and is one of the most expensive precious metals to be found. The base of the clock is made of solid granite named Nero Assoluto.

It fits perfect to the cool elegance of this clock without loosing its elegance in design. The NT 1 “La beauté” is a clock, made for purist among clock enthusiasts.

Why is the Naeschke workshop always looking for new challenges? Sounding out the frontiers of physics and translating the results into harmonious objects is without question a wonderful task.

The fascination of mechanics really begins on its boundaries. It is usually a question of the boundaries of stability, of the largest and the tiniest of forces, of miniaturisation or of the greatest or the slowest of speeds. Venturing into realms such as these was always the great challenge for clockmakers. A typical case of this was the one-year precision clock, which was invented 150 years ago.

However, one challenge that had never been accomplished was to design a four-year clock. Far beyond the efficiency this brings, this clock is an expression of our times. It needs very little care or attention. It will prompt its owners daily to think about their relationship to time.


The development of this four-year clock is based on the experience in the Naeschke workshop of building a total of 75 one-year clocks. The result is an extremely robust and durable clock – and a remarkably beautiful clock of harmonious design. There is nothing and has never been anything comparable.

The enormous power, this clock needs to be driven, was the biggest challenge for Matthias Naeschke.

Here, seven wheels run in ruby or ball bearings between 6-mm thick plates. Two independent main and intermediate wheels transmit their rotation to a common third intermediate wheel. This construction, which was devised in the Naeschke workshop, permits the use of normal clock wheels, even for the great wheel. And thus the energy needed is halved. This is the basic concept behind the four-year clock.

For the escapement, we have again used the proven dead beat escapement with round ruby pallets.

The precision of the craftsman’s skills is taken to extremes in this clock: every single escape wheel is very finely balanced in a special device. Any imbalance in the wheel is eliminated by means of fine vertical drill holes at the base of the teeth.

The regulator is a compensation pendulum which was also completely developed by Matthias Naeschke. In the meantime it has been successfully used in various different clocks. Three different materials work together in this 5-rod compensation pendulum.

The case is very sturdy and torsion-free, to be able to withstand the great forces and weights involved. It is made of dark stained cherry wood, but still looks light and delicate. Silver strips surround the three-faceted glass. The clock conveys an impression of timelessness, and at the same time is reminiscent of the Empire style.

The NL 400 is an exceptionally beautiful clock. Its movement is appreciated by lovers of craftsmanship and technology alike. A great deal of ambition and loving detail went into this half-hour striking movement.

Its persuasively harmonious design and extremely robust construction promise durability for generations. Once wound, this beautiful, gold-plated movement runs and strikes for a full four months.


The prerequisite for this is an extremely regular torque transmission. The perfection and precision of the toothing was therefore carried to extremes.

Fourteen stainless, triple-screwed ball bearings, 9 ruby bearings and large ruby pallets on the lever also play an important role.

The well-established Naeschke 5-rod compensation pendulum is used to regulate the rate. Despite the small dimensions of the striking mechanism, remarkable rate results are achieved.

However, the main reason for the clock running so long is the newly developed Naeschke striking mechanism, which requires only 50% of the energy of conventional striking mechanisms. What is interesting is that you can observe the striking mechanism and the bell from the front. A lot of experimenting was done before the final decision was made on the shape and hence the pure and crystal clear sound of the silver-bronze bell.

There is a choice of two versions of the NL400:

1. A large chapter ring with an inner second scale or
2. A small chapter ring, with an outer second scale, which puts more emphasis on the form of the mechanism.

This long case clock, with its eight-week movement and its half-hour strike, using two large bells (ding, dong), is a classic and distinguished living room clock, or hall clock.

This carefully fashioned clock is predestined to provide permanent pleasure to anyone with style and culture. Even if the owners are absent for longer periods of time, the clock will still be running and striking on their return.


The sturdy movement, which has been designed to last for generations, has great potential for a variety of special individual requirements. Apart from hours, minutes and seconds, it can indicate the date, the full calendar, the perpetual calendar, equation of time, the phases of the moon, etc. It is shown here with a special reminder or wake-up function, which has never before been implemented.

As an alternative to the German silver chapter ring with Roman numerals, there is also a closed version with Arabic Breguet numerals. Treasure of gold- down to the very detail

Precision. This word coming from the Latin (praecisus meaning briefly, abrupt, precipitous, clipped) is incompatible with the occupation of the clockmaker. Since briefly, nothing at all lasts while manufacturing a clockwork. It has rather turned back. Nevertheless the concept of ‘precision’ has emerged in the technical usage as a synonym for exactness.

Variation in Gold: NT6GG

And exactness is, what is expected of good clockwork whether its made for the wrist or standing in the living room. Thus, in this context precision is only what the human makes of it. He contemplates which parts of his work are good and which are not. It only becomes perfect and pleases the subsequent owner of his clock if it delivers reliability and longevity.

This is precisely the philosophy of Matthias Naeschke and his team for building clocks. This counts also for the table clock NT6 “La gracieuse”. The clockmaker who constructs the clock monitors himself constantly and never leaves anything to the chance. And a table clock emerges, fascinating and complete, including attention to the smallest possible detail. Mounted on well glazed and black columns of anodized aluminium the work of the NT6 “La gracieuse” seeks to engage its horological friends from every angle, concealing none of her technical secrets.

From Naeschke fine clocks comes “La mignone“-

a special table clock. Measururing L 30 x D 14 x H 13,5 cms this clock shows an aesthetic affinity with smaller apartment furniture and desks. The profile of the formed clockwork plates are reminiscent of the shapes of the cabinets of the classical German Buffet-Uhren.

Variation NT5RH – The Rhodium Version

Each movement of the “La mignone“ series is made by hand, piece by piece in the best Naeschke tradition. All components undergo a lengthy production process during which they are continuously cut and polished with the very finest compounds and finally gilded to hold and preserve the finish. For accurate time-keeping a shockproof Swiss platform with anchor escapement and screwed balance is fitted. The bright red of the seventeen ruby bearings and endstones stands in beautiful contrast with the golden sheen of the gilded parts. The 14-day movement lightly floats over its black anodized aluminium base and the fitted glass chamber invites a completely free appreciation of the filigreed mechanics. Fine polished, flame-blued hands orbit a matt rhodium galvanized dial.

The table clocks NT 3 and NT 4 are the smallest clocks in the Matthias Naeschke collection. The NT 3 shows time, date and moon phases together with day and night indications.

Instead of printing stars on the moon disc, diamond-like stones are set. The heart of the NT 3 table clock is a new 14-day movement with a Swiss lever escapement.

Each part is handmade with the highest accuracy. Carefully grained and polished, the gilded movements have a highly distinguished appearance. The cabinets, made of 20 separate wooden and metal parts, are made with the same precision as the movements. They are varnished in various steps and highly polished. The final mounting is made in the horological workshop of Matthias Naeschke to guarantee the very best quality of the clock.

The heart of the NT 4 table clock is a new spring driven 14-day movement. With its size of only
82 x 82 x 45 mm this movement fits into a very small case.


Each part is handmade with the highest accuracy. Carefully grained and polished, the gilded movements have a highly distinguished appearance. Hardened and mirror polished arbors and pinions engage with precision cut wheels running in 14 ruby bearings to minimise friction.

The escapement of this clock is a Swiss lever escapement with a screwed balance. The cabinets, made of 20 separate wooden and metal parts, are made with the same precision as the movements. They are varnished in various steps and highly polished. The final mounting is made in the horological workshop of Matthias Naeschke to guarantee the very best quality of the clock.

The NT 3 is available in all the wood colours of Matthias Naeschke together with different dial options. Special orders with client’s requirements are welcome.

The design philosophy for the Naeschke NT 2 was to create a timepiece that will provide for business people (or the private individual) to comprehend the different time-zones around the world.

For this purpose Matthias & Sebastian Naeschke considered all the necessary functions that help facilitate international communication.

The NT 2 unites a perpetual calendar, an indication of the calendar-week and world time-zones. The problems arising for handling the differentials of summer time were solved in the Business-Clock by using different colours for cities of the world (those with or without summer time). Another special feature of the NT 2 is an alternative 24hr dial, mounted on the rear of the movement. The hour hand of this dial is mounted with an adjustment wheel with latch so it can be changed to indicate any time-zone directly.

To turn the clock from one side to the other to observe the alternate 24hr dial, the massive case made of granite, brass and glass must be reversed and Matthias Naeschke and his team had to find a way to rotate the clock on its base. The solution was found in a large turntable with a huge oversized flat ball race. The whole clock is now on a concealed rotary suspension about 2mm above the table and can be turned freely.

The fine-finished, gilded movement of the NT 2 is a construction with three main plates. It is, in common with Matthias Naeschke design philosophies, a long running movement with a power reserve of nine weeks. A window in one of the dials indicates when the clock must be wound.

The barrel, fusee and train wheels sit between two massive 4mm main plates. The remaining mechanisms, the Swiss lever escapement and parts of the perpetual calendar are planted in the second level of the main plates.

The dials of the Business-Clock are made of several different chapter-rings mounted on the base dials. Polished parts alternate and contrast with grained parts and it requires more than 20 working processes to print and finish the dials.

Blued and gilded hands glide over the indications and give the NT 2 its face – its exclusive personality.

In this select timepiece, classical clockmaking melds with modern concepts producing a clock built without any possible compromise of design or quality. Manufactured by masters of their profession a unique clock of this exclusive calibre is set to last for many generations.

Long duration clocks are a cornerstone trademark of the exclusive living room clocks from the manufacture of Matthias Naeschke in the South German village of Haigerloch. The new Regulator NR 366 with eight months running reserve, perfectly fits the philosophy of the brand.

And now for the first time Naeschke introduces a classic Regulator Dial – but not completely. Contrary to the classic ‘Regulator’ indications where seconds are read on a seconds sub-dial, the NR 366 seconds are read directly at the fundamental escape wheel of the clock movement This wheel has 120 teeth, is engraved in ten-second segments and revolves once in four minutes (being 240 pendulum ‘ticks’). Thus, by means of a small pointer, mounted directly over the engraved rim of the wheel, the seconds can be read precisely. Hours and minutes are read on two hand engraved chapter rings made of sterling silver and the delicate minute hand is counter-weighted to eliminate torque variation. The gilded skeleton movement of the NR 366 is manufactured observing the best traditional craftsmanship and each part is made by hand. Six modern stainless steel ball bearings, four ruby bearings and ruby pallets at the anchor are just some of the high-value features of this clock. Together with its grid-iron temperature compensating pendulum, the NR 366 movement is incorporated into a superb nut-wood cabinet. In addition Matthias Naeschke offers further variants of this clock including colour choice of clockwork or cabinet and proceeding to completely unique pieces, built to the absolute wishes of the client.

Style outlives fashion. Interior furnishings are rarely intended to just fulfil their everyday function. Rooms that are furnished to meet personal needs and concepts reflect that person’s personality and character. This is exactly what the Naeschke one-month regulators are designed to be: character timepieces. The various models adapt to the existing furnishings, complement them and, at the same time, fulfil their roles as  reliable timekeepers.

“Just perfect!“ This befits the dials of the one-month precision clocks, which are coated with granulated silver. Hands hand-sawn from sheet steel, hardened and blued over a flame glide over these dials. A valuable knurled, gilded bezel constitutes the frame.

The technology of the movements inspires people. Here, as in the clocks with eight-day movement, the rack strike train developed by Matthias Naeschke is used. A gong rod made of hard bronze strikes unobtrusively at every hour and half-hour.

The dial:

The regulator dials are crafted in an elaborate and time-consuming process. Granulated silver is applied to a base brass dial. Thanks to a method learnt from old craftsmen, it is possible to draw pin-sharp lines that are less than a tenth of a millimetre thick.

The cases:

The case of a clock made by Matthias Naeschke is never just decoration or an end in itself. On the contrary, it is a living, unique part of the whole. Each tree, each piece of wood has its own history.

To understand this history and to transform this raw material into a clock case requires the help of highly skilled cabinet makers.

They meticulously select the timbers that combine to make up a single harmonic unit in grain and colour. Depending on how the light falls, the structure of the wood still shines through the clear varnish.

Made for generations:

Captured within rubies and ball bearings, elegant gilded wheels run between beautifully crafted plates. The design goes back to the principles of classical clock-making. Fine satin-work and brilliant polishes alternate with each other. The striking mechanisms are based on a totally new principle. To save energy, the number of wheels required to drive the clock was reduced. The striking mechanism consists of only two moving parts.

Complications:

Upon request,  movements without a striking mechanism can be fitted with a calendar. A disk printed with the months and days of the calendar is visible through a segment of the dial. The calendar only needs to be adjusted once every four years, in February.

A specially developed compensation pendulum is found in all one-month precision clocks.

The smallest Naeschke regulators are available with or without striking mechanism. Today, sturdy striking clocks that run for 8 days with a weight-fall of only 30 cm are unique. Each component is scrutinized by the clockmaker numerous times, getting his undivided attention. Not the slightest irregularity escapes unnoticed and precision is uncompromisingly pursued. The human factor is the decisive quality criterion.

The quality of the movements, which are always gold-plated can only be described as “absolutely perfect”.

The escapement of the small movements of Matthias Naeschke:

A dead-beat escapement is utilised in the eight-day and one-month movements. The result is an extremely quiet, unobtrusive ticking of the clock.

The striking mechanism:

The striking mechanism, however, is a completely new development by Matthias Naeschke. Instead of the standard 5 wheels, he uses only 3, thus greatly reducing the losses. The hammer and the lifting piece make up one single moving component, and the rack lifts this component when the clock strikes, which is different to usual. A striking mechanism with only 3 wheels and 2 cadratures is an absolute innovation. Also completely new is the fact that the first strike and the half-strike are performed by the going train as a passing strike. All of these together save 50% energy and hence weight fall.

Knurling:

Knurling was developed by craftsmen in the 18th century. Not only clocks, but also high-quality furniture and lamps were fitted with knurled adornments. Knurling is extremely time-consuming and nowadays, with the exception of only a few remaining craftsmen, this occupation has more or less died out in Europe. The beauty of knurling results from the contrast between polished and sharp-edged matt detailing.

John Harrison (born 31. März 1693 in Foulby near Wakefield, Yorkshire; † 24. März1776 in London) was a self-educated English clockmaker. He invented the “marine chronometer”, a long-sought device in solving the problem of establishing the East-West position or longitude of a ship at sea, thus revolutionising and extending the possibility of safe long distance sea travel in the “Age of Sail”. The problem was considered so intractable that the British Parliament offered a prize of £ 20,000 (comparable to £2.87 million / €3.65 million / $4.72 million in modern currency) for the solution.

The Clock

In May of 1714 representations from Her Majesty’s Fleet, Merchants and Merchant-Men demanded the Government encourage the solution of the Longitude problem and in July of that year the Longitude Act was passed offering up to £20,000 for a method of determining Longitude at Sea.

In the mid 1720′s Yorkshire born John Harrison started work on what would be the first of his clocks, H1 that would work on board ships and so solve the Longitude problem. In 1772 after a lifetimes work, culminating in the watch H4, John Harrison was paid the final balance of the £20,000 reward.

In 1999 Sinclair Harding started work on a clock in homage to John Harrison. Nearly 5 years in the making the Sinclair Harding H1 is a wonderful combination of art and fascinating mechanics, all finished to an exquisite standard.

Approximately 3/4 (24″ wide x 18″ deep x 18″ high) of the original size, this still impressive piece puts on show Harrison’s inventions, from the simple yet significant roller mounting of the Spring barrel arbor through the elegance of the Grasshopper escapement to the to the mind-boggling complexity of the Grid Iron compensation mechanism.

L’Epee

The first authentic carriage clock was built in Paris at the beginning of the 19th Century by Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823).

‚Carriage Clocks’ were originally used by traveling business people and also by the military. According to a legend, Napoleon equiped after a lost battle every officer with such a clock to be able to organize his stretegies in the war better.

Since 1839 L’Epee is manufacturing such Carriage Clocks. Through special processing of the materials and the high precision of the movements, the clocks are built in “apparent fascination with mechanics”!.

The history: In 1777, on the territory of Montbeliard, France, Frederic Japy founded the first clock-factory in the world. Several such factories in this area were established over time. One of them was the L’Epee workshop, which began in 1839 to build movements, excapements, and finally produce complete clocks. They also produced music boxes, which later found their way into the finest public and private collections in the world.

The L’Epee factory received prestigious awards (in gold) at various international exhibitions. In Paris in 1889 and 1900, Vienna 1892, Hanoi 1902, and in America and Great Britain. L’Epee Clocks can now be found in most countries in the world.

1999 FA Gluck, a London-based watchmaker house, acquired the company L’Epee and moved production to England, which opened a new chapter of history L’Epee’s. Our clocks are replicas, in the spirit of old clockmaking. They are perfect reproductions, supported by new technologies, assurancing ongoing quality.

In the purest tradition of English carriage clock manufacturer in the mid-19th Century, represents the model of perfection of such a rapprochement watches of this period by its simple lines. Standard Sea Clock HIS

The Standard Sea clock was the first of the Sea clocks made by Sinclair Harding. The original design was conceived by Richard Good and styled by Mike Harding in the 1980’s. In 1999 several modifications were made to the movement as part of Sinclair Harding’s continuous bid to improve on every clock made.

The main modification was the addition of a Chain driven Fusee, another of Harrison’s inventions, which subsequently made improvements in the clocks timekeeping abilities – important for a clock “Inspired by John Harrison”.

All the movement features of the Moonhase Sea clock, with the obvious exception of the Moonphase dial, are incorporated in this clock.

Standard Sea ClockHER’s

Two styles of clock are available and for the want of a better term they are named “His” and “Hers”. As with all Sinclair Harding clocks a selection of finish and base materials can be specified to make your clock a very personal piece.

Each clock is individually serial numbered and is protected by a framed glass shade – not shown, enabling winding each week to be carried out without having to remove the glass.

Great Wheel Skeleton Clocks

In homage to the James Condliffe of Liverpool, circa 1860 this single train skeleton clock is the first of a collection of 3 different pieces being made in 2008/2009 and NEW for BASELWORLD 2008.

The exquisite crossings of the wheelwork and plates have been designed to show Sinclair Harding’s attention to detail and finishing at its very best.

The frames, pierced out of solid brass, are gracefully faceted, polished and burnished to provide a gleaming support for the four-wheel train. The Great Wheel has 288 teeth and makes only one revolution daily. This drives the centre wheel, which is framed, by the pierced chapter ring and bezel. The hands are extremely delicate and can made in gold plated brass or highly polished and blued steel to provide a greater contrast.

The escapement is a ‘Graham Deadbeat’ controlled by a ‘silk’ suspension and Invar pendulum. The movement is fitted with Maltese cross stop work to achieve the best timekeeping and the clock runs for a full 8 days.

The movement is mounted on two ornate pillars and appears to be floating over the base made from a sandwich of decorative brass plates and selected wood or marble of your choice.

Finally the clock is protected by a framed glass shade (not shown), which does not need removing to wind.

The piece is available finished with gold plate or a combination of gold and Rhodium.

William Congreve, the son of a British General and more famous for his invention of the first Rocket in 1795, patented in 1808 a new Principle for the Measurement of Time using a rolling ball escapement. His original piece was powered by a Cannon ball although later models were driven by springs.

His resulting clock was far from accurate, however the mechanism provides a fascinating and hypnotic spectacle for the viewer. The Sinclair Harding Congreve uniquely has the track mounted on top of the clock. A ruby ball meanders along the track triggering the mechanism every 15 seconds to gently reverse the ball. The skeletonised track also makes it easy to clean and provides a reasonable degree of timekeeping.

The matching dial is made from brass on to which is applied a cold enamel of the correct colour. The quarter hour indicators are then machined through the enamel before the dial is finally given a coat of clear enamel. The clock is powered by a spring through a hand made chain, which drives the movement through a Fusee to ensure the clock mechanism sees a constant torque. The movement is 8 days and is wound from the back of the clock on our model with the elliptical dial or from the front on our model with the circular dial. At the other end of the train a fly absorbs any shock loads at each index and prevents the tray indexing mechanism vibrating.

This elegant Skeleton clock with a novel pendulum arrangement features a dramatic hand painted Sun and Moon dial. The dial rotates once a day revealing a Day and Night sky into which is incorporated a Moonphase aperture showing the different phases of the moon throughout the 29 ½ day cycle.

The Pendulum bob is mounted between the enamel dial and the front plate and the bob itself is shaped like the rising Sun which reflects light of its many facets in motion giving added life to the clock.

Between the massively thick plates the movement is light and airy featuring wheels with 5 and 6 crossings and the whole clock is mounted on a wooden base of your choice, French polished to a mirror finish.

The movement is powered by a going barrel and has a minimum 8 days going, wound from the front the key is stored into the side of the base.
Finally the whole clock is protected by a framed glass shade, which does not need to be removed for winding.

This magnificent chiming Skeleton Clock is the result of months of painstaking hand work. Each plate is individually cut out of solid brass, edge filed, papered smooth, burnished and gilded before finally being built into a finished clock. Every wheel and arbor, detent and lever has been finished by hand to give the whole mechanism the glittering aspect of a true work of art.

The motive power for the 8 day movement is provided by three mainsprings each operating through its respective fusee and chain to give virtually constant torque to the train of wheels. The going train is fitted with a recoil anchor escapement and controlled by a 0.4 sec pendulum to give a good standard of time keeping.
The escape pallet is made from high carbon steel, with through hardened faces diamond polished to a mirror finish assuring a long life. The chiming train operates a pinned drum and hammer assembly which can be set to play Westminster or a choice of Whittington and St Michael chimes on a hand tuned octave of cast bells, whilst the striking train sounds the hours on a ninth tenor bell. The levers and racks controlling this activity are finished to the same meticulous standard.

The movement is mounted on a Sicilian white marble base, which in its turn, is supported on a mahogany plinth. The brass bound glass shade protects the whole clock from dust, while at the same time allows perfect visibility.

Probably the most classic of all the clocks made by Sinclair Harding is the Table Regulator. The case is made from solid brass polished, bronzed and finally finished with beeswax. It is embellished with heavily gilded furniture such as the classical urn finial on the top, or four palmettos, which break the severe line of the base, mounted on adjustable feet. The front and back opening glass doors are 6mm thick. Similarly finished are the side panels, which give an interesting view of the movement.

The dial is pure ‘Breguet’ with its large diameter seconds and slim chapter ring. Engraved and silvered by hand it represents the high point of elegant simplicity in dial design. The clock has a very substantial 8 day movement controlled by an unusual ‘high Q’ spherical pendulum beating half seconds.

Almost every component for the Table Regulator is individually made in Sinclair Harding’s own workshop. The case itself is made from nearly 60 parts, machined from solid brass. The attention to detail is reflected in the hinge and catches arrangement of the front and back opening doors. This is a rare example of an entirely hand made traditional British clock.

The movement is first pre-built in an un-finished condition. Some 28 jewels are used in the movement and each one has to be fitted and secured by two blued screws, identified and its mating pinion adjusted to ensure the correct end float is achieved. Once this process has been completed the movement is polished to the highest possible standard and the jewels re-set in their final position.

This superb English Chiming Clock is hand made throughout, even down to the door locks on the case! The beautiful hand engraved back plate is the most obvious visible sign of the very high quality of the entire movement, which like the case, is all hand made.

A selection of engraving styles can be chosen and an inscription to commemorate the clocks commission included in the design.

The movement has triple fusees driven by hand made chains, each being 6 feet long. The movement is made with quarter chiming on 8, cast and hand tuned bells, whilst the hour is struck on a ninth and larger bell and the chimes can be switched between Westminster and Whittington, or if you prefer, Westminster and St Michael.

The whole, being regulated by a recoil anchor escapement and Invar pendulum, is capable of very good time keeping.

The clock dial is traditionally produced with a matt finish inside the centre of the chapter ring although extensive engraving to match the back plate can be specified.

With our Brive precision pendulum clocks, we have remained true to our policy of not just using tried and true methods but improving these methods with the help of cutting-edge technology. This has allowed us to integrate several features into our Brive clocks which were formerly impossible to combine.

Due to the difficulties involved in combining a one-year power reserve and a central second hand, these two features are rarely found together in one clock. Brive’s combination of not only these two features but also an anchor that is not laid on its own axle but attached to the pendulum is absolutely unique. Contrary to common practice, the works are driven by two tungstenweights using an epicycloidal gear so that the clock continues to run even while being wound. The rod of the pendulum, which weighs seven kilos, is made of invar and bears an air-pressure and temperature compensator.

The escape-wheel is made of a very light alloy and driven by a delicate spiral spring in its hub. The escapement is highly efficient due to minimal inertia. Because of the gears’ wear-resistant diamond coating, friction loss in the gears is negligible.

Expert craftsmanship is visible in many of the details: the Geneva stripes on the plates, the polished chatons, wheels and their spokes. The case consists of fine, highly polished nickel-coated brass framing with facetted glass sides.

Brive’s technical innovations, high-quality materials and meticulous handiwork combine to make it not only exclusively valuable but also extremely reliable due to its lasting precision.

Precision Pendulum clocks are our passion. Although our daily life is not longer ruled by mechanical clocks for more than 60 years, they still fascinate us through the uninterrupted motion of wheels, pinions and the escapement. Our vocation is to perpetuate the tradition of these precious clocks.

Due to the fact that former clockmakers always focused on improving their precision clocks we see it our task not to rebuild but to innovate and create new clocks. For this reason, we have realised new features. Other features which have in the past been rejected on account of their difficulty, are successfully incorporated in the construction. Several years of development and many trials were necessary to build Gramat, a timekeeper which exceptionally unifies features that never were in a clock:

The new patented escapement in relation with a long, very thin centre second. Different than in all escapements known so far, the pendulum of the Gramat is not in contact with any mechanical element like a spring, levers or anchor. The impulse which is necessary to entertain its oscillation, is completed by very little displacement of its suspension axis. This new construction gives the pendulum the highest grade of clearance, never found on a mechanical pendulum clock. In spite of its elegance and its easy legibility, a central seconds hand on precision clocks is rarely to find.

A four months power reserve with 3 kg tungsten-weight. Nevertheless all pinions have more than thirteen leaves. The exceptional long power reserve is the result of the wheel with 400 teeth, the build-in epicycloidal gear in its hub and the double pulleys. All staffs are beard either in microball-bearings or in jewels.

The skeleton design allows the best view in the movement and its function. The temperature compensated pendulum and its Invar-rod is suspended on a strong column itself fixed on the back of the case. This very stiff attachment of the pendulum is the necessary condition for a good precision of the clock.
The arbor of the barrel takes also the place of a pillar for the movement. This allows us to design very sparing plates.

The air-tight case and the regulation of the density of the air. Not the pressure of the air but its density is the parameter which influences the pendulum. With a sub-pressure and the unprecedented way to regulate the density of the air in the case, we also eliminate fluctuation resulting from its hygrometry and its temperature.

The wheels with perfectly polished spokes, the lapped edges, the chatons and the pinions with their polished faces and the thin hand-filed hands testify accuracy, accomplished in our clocks. Many hours of handwork are necessary to finish the spares which had been milled or lathe on modern machines. Then they are polished, gilded or nickel-plated till they satisfy our high exigency. The result is a very exceptional clock in its style and its features.

Precision pendulum clocks have traditionally been equipped with separate hands, described by a historical term: “regulator face”. In the wall clock Sarlat, this tradition has been uniquely paired with an elegant, delicate yet sturdy skeleton clockwork. A signature feature is the impressive V-shaped construction of the hanging works, which give the pendulum the extremely static foundation required for exactness.

The pendulum, based on Riefler’s model, is of course temperature compensated. Suspended on knife edges, it controls a gravity escapement which, in turn, is constructed to prevent any jarring motion from hampering its functionality. The very fine second hand and the long minute hand each turn in its ring divided into 60 parts.

But the hours are displayed in numbers read in the cut-out of the V-shaped plate. They are 3-dimensional and have been worked into the thickness of the driving wheel free on all sides. Another unusual feature for a clock is the minute hand that, when the clock is set, drops into place according to the second hand’s position.

As is the case in our Brive and Gramat clocks, the Sarlat precision pendulum clock is equipped with an otherwise very rare epicycloid gear. This ensures not only a long duration but also uninterrupted operation even while the clock is being rewound.

All of the wheels are gold plated. The plates have Geneva stripes and are nickel-plated. The pivots have ball bearings; the smaller ones even have ceramic ball bearings. This position, combined with a diamond coating on the pinions, makes it possible to do without any kind of lubrication, so that the clock is virtually maintenance free. The metal casing, kept as simple as possible, opens up the beautiful clockwork for viewing and makes this chronometer an incomparable object of beauty.

On the occasion of the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 to 1791) Kieninger with the limited edition model 1756 proudly presents a special highlight of modern clock craft. Heart of the clock is the newly developed bell chime with the world known melodies from the serenade in G-major „A Little Night Music” (KV 525, composed 1787) and the aria of Papageno "The Bird Hunter Am I” which is part of the opera "The Magic Flute” (KV 620, first performed in Vienna 1791).

The elaborately crafted handpolished black finish case features beveled crystal glasses in door, side panels and the pediment, allowing a full view of the precious bell chime. An elaborate etched moon dial with the famous view of the Mozart town Salzburg on the moon disc, radial chime selector, date function and second indication completes the distinctive design.

Robert Bray’s goal is to build the best clocks.

Robert Bray, born 1956, came relatively late to clockmaking. After he left the school with 15, he began training in a small company that produced precision gears. In the university he acquired enough knowledge to complete his studies in 1979 at Brunel University in Manufacturing Technology with distinction. Until 1995, he came into this company with all forms and facets of engineering in touch: from design to production to quality control for the aerospace, military and medicine.

In 1995, he sought a new challenge. He took over the company “Sinclair Harding” (Cheltenham) from the retiring founder – Mike Hardingum to ensure that this famous watch brand has continued existence. At the same time he began to focus on the art of clockmaking. In 2002 he took the AHCI as a candidate and three years later as a member on. In 2006 he became part of the British Horological Society.

Sinclair Harding, a fascinating mantel clock

The division of time into exactly equal parts of 0.4-second shuttle takes in connection with a lever escapement. The quarter hour strike movement with eight hand-tuned cast bells can be heard either a Westminster, Whittington or St.-Michel-melody.
